The NRCSE Creative Teaching and Learning (CTL) project focuses on the role that arts and cultural learning play in transforming young people’s lives. It also explores how such interventions can support supplementary school teachers in adopting more creative approaches in their teaching.
The first round of the project started in January 2020. A selection of supplementary schools (13 schools) were signed up to work in partnership with the Artis Foundation and its specialists, who are highly trained arts educators. In terms of programme training, 3 days of workshops with Artis specialists were arranged but only one workshop has been delivered in January 2020, you can get an idea of some of the session by watching this video. Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the other two workshops will be delivered over the summer and autumn school terms in a mixture of online and face-to-face sessions.
The training aims to give participants the opportunity to learn more about practical strategies. The aim is to explore how arts and cultural learning can deepen pupil engagement, so contributing to language learning, creativity and problem-solving while raising their levels of confidence. The main role of teachers here is to implement the techniques that they have acquired and record its impact on their teaching and on student learning. NRCSE will encourage and support the teachers and schools throughout the programme.
We believe that there are incredible talents locked up within many teachers and children as well as in our community. In fact, it takes more effort to contain them as, once you release it, then you’ll see the harvest of achievements opening new windows and presenting new opportunities.
The project aims to support you in linking your work in the supplementary education sector with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

During ‘lockdown’ I’ve organised virtual sessions on ‘sharing creative ideas’ with teachers who signed up for the creative project. These sessions aim to provide a platform for teachers to share creative ideas about virtual learning with the intention of making the lessons more enjoyable and interactive for children or young people. Various activities have been discussed and shared in each of these sessions. Here are some examples.
