Ofqual regulated training
- Teaching skills in supplementary schools & Practical teaching in supplementary schools plus Maintaining a safe learning environment (8 credits)
- Teaching a language in a supplementary school (6 credits)
- Teaching in Islamic supplementary schools (2 credits or 10 credits when combined with generic Teaching skills & Practical teaching and Maintaining a safe learning environment modules)
- Supporting special educational needs in supplementary schools (3 credits)
- Managing a safe learning environment (2 credits)
These modules can be combined to obtain two new national vocational qualifications – Level 2 Award in Teaching in Supplementary Schools and other Out of School Settings and Level 3 Certificate in Teaching in the Supplementary Education Sector.
Most modules are also available as stand-alone courses. The 6 and 8 credit modules can be run as six full-day or nine to eleven half-day or twilight sessions. We can also run them as a combination of full and half days including evenings and weekends. All our courses require a commitment to the full course duration. Trainees will be assessed on the following: discussion and description of work; reflective diary; action planning; and short essays. For the ‘Teaching skills in supplementary schools’, ‘Teaching a language’ and ‘Teaching in Islamic supplementary schools’ modules there is an assessed micro-teach and practice file and learners will need to evaluate their own teaching practice.

Teaching skills in supplementary schools (modular course with 80 hours of assessed learning)
- This course combines the learning from our popular teaching and learning day courses into an OCN-accredited course. This course is offered at Level 2 and Level 3, worth eight credits. On completion of the course, learners will have gained an understanding of:
• the education system in England and the role of supplementary schools
• the responsibilities of teachers, including lesson planning, assessment and monitoring
• different learning styles and their effect on learning
• the welfare needs of children and strategies that promote positive behaviours - knowledge of how to create a safe and effective learning environment.
Cost (includes tutor fee, moderation, full set of learner resources, assessment and registration fee)
• for up to 11 learners: £3,907 incl. tutor, course administration, learner registration and verification, learner resources.
• additional learners from 12-16 are charged at £73.50 per learner for registration and course books.
Teaching a language in a supplementary school (modular course with 60 hours of assessed learning)
This course combines develops the learning from our popular Teaching skills in supplementary schools to concentrate specifically on language teaching eg. Arabic, Bengali, Polish, Tamil, Albanian. This course is offered at Level 2 and Level 3, worth six credits. On completion of the course, learners will have gained an understanding of:
• language-history and the experience of learning a language as a bilingual or heritage language learner
• the four areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing
• how to create a scheme of work or syllabus
• how to adapt and make resources that support language learning.
Cost (includes tutor fee, moderation, full set of learner resources, assessment and registration fee)
• for 10 learners: £3,782 excl vat
• for 15 learners: £4,242 excl vat
Bolt-on modules – these modules complement the learning from either of the above courses.
Teaching in Islamic supplementary schools (bolt-on course with 20 hours of assessed learning)
This course builds on the popular Teaching skills course with a seminar format and tailored learner book specifically relevant to teaching within a Madrasah or Maktab. This course is offered at Level 2 and 3, worth two credits. It can be offered before or after the Teaching skills course. On completion of the course, learners will have gained an understanding of:
• the roles and responsibilities of teachers within a Madrasah environment and how a teacher can support a child’s welfare and special learning needs.
• the teaching methodologies adopted by the Qur’an and the Prophets
• the development of Madrassahs in Britain
• how Madrasah education can contribute to a child’s life in Britain
• how to evaluate ones own teaching methods within a Madrasah context

Supporting children with SEND in supplementary schools (bolt-on course with 30 hours of assessed learning)
This course builds on the popular Teaching skills course and is offered at Level 2 and 3, worth three credits. It can be offered before or after the Teaching skills course, or on its own. On completion of the course, learners will have gained an understanding of:
• specific areas of special educational need (SEND),
• the impact of developmental issues on children’s learning and behaviour and ways to deal with inappropriate behaviour,
• inclusive practice and a range of activities that can be used with a child or group of children,
• the legislation, policies and procedures used in schools and the impact of those on the achievement and well-being of children with SEND in own setting,
• the range of professional working with children with SEND and why it is important to work in partnership.

Managing a safe environment in a supplementary school (bolt-on module with 20 hours of assessed learning)
This OCN-accredited course is aimed at teachers who wish to obtain the new Level 3 Certificate in Teaching in the supplementary education sector. The module is delivered over eight hours (can be 2 or 3 sessions) and covers:
• learning how to create an effective learning environment
• understanding the welfare needs of students and learning how to support them
• developing good learning relationships through effective classroom management
Cost (includes tutor fee for 2 x 4 hours’ training, marking and moderation of learner portfolio, full set of learner resources, assessment and registration fee).

• additional learners: £31.50 each excl. vat
Effective management skills in supplementary schools (modular course with 30 hours of assessed learning)
This OCN-accredited course is available at Level 2, worth three credits and covers:
• sharing views about supplementary schools and why they are important to children and families
• learning how to create an effective learning environment and good learning relationships
• understanding the welfare needs of students and learning how to support them
• planning helpful new partnerships to support your work
• learning how to monitor and evaluate the success of your supplementary school.

Supporting children with SEND in supplementary school
Thanks to a generous grant from the British & Foreign Schools Society, this course has been offered free of charge to all teachers who have completed the Effective Teaching Skills course in London, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Luton in 2017/2018. The course is currently being delivered in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelseas and will be available those teachers who have completed the ETS course as part of the John Lyon’s Charity project – it will run Tuesdays in May 2019.
Effective teaching skills in Islamic supplementary schools
Running Autumn 2019/Spring 2020 in partnership with Faiths Forum Strengthening Faith Institutions
This course adds the Teaching in Islamic supplementary schools module to the Effective Teaching Skills course. It has been delivered to over 300 Madrasah/Maktab teachers through SFI and in the London Boroughs of Haringey, Islington, Crawley and Camden.
